Custom vs. Store-Bought Dining Tables: Are They Worth It?
Share
Short answer: a custom dining table is worth it if you plan to keep it for ten years or more, need a size or shape stores don’t carry, or want solid hardwood instead of veneer. It is not worth it if you need a table this week or your budget is under about $1,000. Here’s the honest breakdown from a shop that builds them.
What each one actually costs
A store-bought dining table runs anywhere from $300 for a flat-pack veneer table to $2,000 and up for solid wood from a quality retailer. Our custom tables start around $1,200, and the final price depends on size, wood species, base, and finish. So custom isn’t automatically the expensive option. It sits in the same range as mid-tier retail, and you choose where every dollar goes.
The bigger difference is what the money buys. At a store, the price covers the table plus the retailer’s markup, warehousing, and shipping from wherever it was made. With a custom build, it covers kiln-dried solid hardwood, the hours to build and finish it by hand, and delivery into your dining room.
When store-bought is the smarter buy
We build custom tables for a living, and there are still situations where we’d tell you to buy from a store:
You need it now. A custom table takes 6 to 10 weeks. If you’re hosting Thanksgiving in two weeks, a store table is the right call.
Your budget is firmly under $1,000. A well-made store table at $700 will serve you better than stretching for the cheapest possible custom build.
The table is temporary. Furnishing a rental, a starter home you’ll outgrow, or a staging project? Buy the inexpensive table. Custom is for the room you’re settling into.
You want to sit at it first. A showroom lets you try before you buy. We offer photos, wood samples, and pickup visits, but it’s not the same as sitting down at the finished piece.
When custom is worth the money
Your space doesn’t match store sizes. Store tables come in a handful of standard lengths. If your dining room is narrow, your nook is odd-shaped, or you need to seat ten in a room built for eight, a table built to your measurements solves what no amount of shopping will. Our sizing guide shows what fits where.
You want solid wood, not veneer. Most retail tables under $1,500 are veneer over particleboard or MDF. It looks like wood until the first deep scratch, and it can’t be refinished. Every table we build is solid hardwood all the way through: walnut, white oak, red oak, maple, or ash, kiln-dried before it’s built.
You’re keeping it for decades. A solid hardwood table can be sanded and refinished when life happens to it, then handed down. A veneer table gets replaced. Buy one table every 8 years for $800, and after 24 years you’ve spent more than a custom table would have cost, and you own the third table, not the first.
You want it to match how you actually live. Length, width, thickness, edge profile, base style, stain color. When it’s built to order, those aren’t compromises from what was on the floor that day.
The math over time
A $1,400 custom hardwood table kept for 25 years costs about $56 a year. A $700 store table replaced every 8 years costs about $88 a year, and you spend those years with the table that was close enough instead of the one you wanted. That’s the whole argument, honestly. Custom costs more up front and less over the life of the room.
FAQ
How much more does a custom dining table cost than store-bought?
Often less than people expect. Our tables start around $1,200, which overlaps with mid-range retail pricing for solid wood tables. The gap shows up at the low end: nothing custom competes with a $400 flat-pack table on price.
How long does a custom table take?
Most of our tables are ready in 6 to 10 weeks, depending on the queue when you order. A store table you can have this week. If your timeline is tight, that difference decides it.
Is a custom table a good investment?
If you’ll keep it 10+ years, usually yes. Solid hardwood can be refinished instead of replaced, and our tables carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty against structural and manufacturing defects for the original purchaser.
Can I get a custom table in a specific size?
Yes, that’s the main reason people go custom. We build to your exact length and width. If you’re not sure what your room needs, start with our sizing guide.
